I remember reading about a device called a trap nest, that a hen can enter but not exit -- used by breeders who need to know exactly who lays what and to keep records of laying.

IIRC, the book it was mentioned in stressed that it was CRITICAL to check the nest frequently so that the hen didn't suffer from stress or heat.

Probably way more than a small flock keeper wants to mess with.

Sounds like a good way to encourage them to lay anywhere except in the nest box. I have no doubt such a thing exists... but still...

It can work, was a great thread about it more than a few years ago.
But it takes acclimation and much time and effort.
Good for a serious breeder and persistently patient tinkerer.
