There's an option that says "allow people to view your identities". What does that mean?

I think it's something left over from when members could add contact details for use with (largely now defunct) instant messaging platforms to their profiles, and that setting controlled who could view them.

I was thinking that there should be a setting where people can see your profile and post on it, but they can't see your 'about' part of the profile.

Unfortunately I don't think the forum software package used here has that as an option.
