I thought we wound up with two girls. Does this mean I have a drake, even though there is no curly tail, and they both look identical? Or, do female ducks actually mate each other? These are buff orpington ducks, about 4 months old.

Through my office window. This went on for a full minute.

We're newer to ducks, as a few months ago, these were sort of dropped off here. They've been nothing but fun and joy to have.

Hi.

Or, do female ducks actually mate each other?

They do.
I have seen mines do it even though they have drakes to mate with them... (When you think your girls are overmated, but you then see them mount each others...)

But I didn't know duck hens would go at it at 4-months-old!!

These are buff orpington ducks, about 4 months old.

They are cute. (Pictures are pretty too, of course!!!)

I didn't realize Orpington ducks were, in fact, so Blue...!!

This went on for a full minute.

...Are you exagerating?

Huh... your girls have so much energy...

I have four mature hens and one drake. He mates with three of the hens daily, and we've hatched fertile eggs. My female magpie, named Maggie (of course), has ZERO interest in my drake and never has. He doesn't like her either. He chases her away from food and she steers clear of him. I've seen them mate ONCE last year and that was it. She REGULARLY mounts my other female hens and they REGULARLY mount her, too. It looks exactly the same when my females mount each other as when the drake mounts the females. The only thing that is different is that the females don't do the victory dance after mating like my drake does...instead, when both females are finished, they take a bath. :)

P.S. I have a female Buff Orpington, too! She is my friendliest duck and I love her dearly. <3

Hi!

They aren't even close to blue. It must be the device you're viewing them on. They are buff and cream-colored with a few darker tones, but not a single feather on them is blue.

When I say "Blue", I mean the lighter, greyish coloured feathers...

If my understanding is right, it is the Blue gene that causes these feathers to be so light (?); so, I just call them "Blue".

In any case, Buff is a prettier colour that I thought.
(I have seen pictures of Orpington ducks, but these ducks' plumage looked kind of darker on them...?)
