Can anyone tell me if I need to take cages or do you get the cage when you buy?

Never been to that one. But the auctions i went to had both. Cages and no cages. Some owners choose to sell with cage while other choose to use one big transport cage and then seperate into diff cages at the auction. Taking cages along NEVER hurts.

I saw both, and where you could buy the cage seperate from the birds, all at the same auction! I should add that when I saw all 3 ways in play was in Indiana. Not where you are talking about....

Generally they have all the birds they sell in a cage. The cage goes with the bird when you make the purchase. I did not see any smaller birds (ie. not turkeys and peafowl) that were out of their cages. Dale is pretty good about making sure people have their animals caged for auction.

Today myself, wife and son decided to go to the Iduma Auction. I wanted to share this experience because it was the first auction I ever attended that sold chickens and other small animals. I've read the pro's and con's online about auctions and tried to keep an open mind before going. Honestly, I was quite impressed. I didn't purchase any chickens, but did pick up a few miscellaneous items at their equipment auction prior to the animal auction at a very reasonable price (several less than half of the new price and in good condition).
I'm a new member to BYC. I have raised chickens for many years. Today, I found out I didn't know as much about chickens as I thought I did. These people knew their chickens. They knew what they wanted, the breeds and what they were willing to pay. I thought the cages we labeled well with the lot # & breed. A few cages were tough to see in, due to the way sellers made their cages. The chickens appeared overall in good health and quite the variety. The entire process of getting a bidders number, paying for what I bought and getting my items went smoothly. The auctioneer described the items, as well as one could and everything seem to flow along a a good steady pace. People were very friendly and seemed to enjoy themselves.
We were talking while driving home about how much we enjoyed the auction and plan to go back regularly (they have the auction once a month). I drove about 45 minutes to get there and who do I see when I get there? My neighbor. Small world sometimes.
