If a chick eats a poisonous plant, will they poop blood?

I'm trying to figure out why one chick is pooping red blood. I already treated them for coccidiosis and they were doing great. they're still acting just as happy and peppy as always. eating, drinking, the works. But one, Millie, is pooping red blood. My daughter fed them leaves the other day, no idea what they were. and I know millie ate some. If they were poisonous, would she be pooping red bloody poops? and 4 days later still? I noticed it yesterday morning. and the morning poops were especially bloody and then throughout the day they were ok.

This chick may need to be re-treated for coccidosis. Sometimes they are resistant to treatment.

If it was truly from the eating something, it would of already passed, not still being an issue 4 days later.

Is the chick showing any other signs of illness? Is it eating and drinking as much as the others?
You may need to isolate it with one or two buddies so that you can monitor it better.

How old are these chicks?

all three of them are acting completely normal. that is the weird thing. eating and drinking like crazy. they're 5 1/2 weeks old. before when I started the treatment, it was only little pieces of hamburger like pieces in the poop. nothing like this. I am left confused.

anyone else have some words of wisdom?

I thought with coccidiosis, they act ill and then get bloody poop. and by the time they get really blood poops like this, they're doing really really badly. she's eating and drinking like it is going out of style. she acts fine. she's still jumping all over the place, on the other chicks etc. there appears to be nothing wrong with her. I am just really confused.

I found this today....

Severe infections of coccidiosis will result in young chickens being sleepy and sitting with ruffled feathers. In cases of cecal coccidiosis, dropping will contain blood. Heavy mortality can result if treatment is not started immediately.

Treatment consists of drugs such as liquid amprolium or sulfa drugs (Sulmet, ESB3 or Whitsyn), but one should be careful with sulfa drugs, as they can be toxic when given too long or in too high dosages.

Never give sulfa drugs to laying hens. In E. Necatrix infectious blood may occur in the intestine and mortality can be 1% per week or more.
E. Acervulina infections are less dramatic, but tend to be more chronic in nature with long term damage to the intestine and resulting in smaller, unthrifty pullets that do not produce enough eggs.

If chickens appear sick and ruffled from coccidiosis, get a diagnosis at a diagnostic laboratory. It can be made quickly and medication started immediately.

Amprolium (Corid) - for treating coccidiosis; very safe. (See recommended dose under coccidiosis).

Sulfaquinoxaline or Sulfamethazine - water or feed; less safe; somewhat toxic to bone marrow. Withdrawal - 10 days.

It looks like you can safely say if your girls are acting normal, then it is unlikely it is Coccidiosis.

Thanks! That is what the conclusion I came to. COMPLETELY normal! for days after seeing blood. What I"m thinking is maybe she ate something sharp? I have kids and there are lots of whackadoo things floating around my yard. I wonder if she ate something that cut her intestine inside. the bloody poop I saw yesterday was a very dark bloody looking clot type deal, with the urates on the other side. I"m hoping that if it is not bright red and it is getting black, that it is healing up. but it was definitely blood. hopefully this is all it is!

I'm giving them probiotics regardless though, can't hurt!

One thing I've noticed this morning is that she is really trying hard to poop sometimes. And when she finally gets something out, it is just a little bit. Not every poop, but some poops she strains. I wonder if she did in fact eat something whacko an0d it is just not passing through correctly.
