If a chick extends its neck and opens their beak...

I had one do the barking thing tonight! It was one of my BR's and all the other chicks froze in place while it 'barked' and were silent the entire time.

Oddly enough, it was when my DH came down to talk to me and see the chicks......hhmmm

After treat time, my little ones will lie down in the sun and "purr," or when I'm holding one of my special ones in my lap it will start to purr. I haven't heard "barking" yet, though.

On another note, I do have a dog that crows - my Aussie will howl when one of my roosters crows. She only does it when Rocky crows. I'm guessing he hits a note that she objects to.

Hi, I’m new to chickens. I had a couple when I was younger; unfortunately they all were taken away from me after a few months by people who didn't think I should raise a chicken, (my parents). Needless to say I am an adult now and I just got my first peep. This little thing is so affectionate, I have no idea what breed he or she is and it doesn’t really matter because I love it so much. I do notice a "purr" when the peep is content. Loves to be held, snuggle, and loves to see people. I was wondering if anyone can maybe help me with the breed of this little peep or maybe even an age or any advice for a newbie peep lover. ok maybe i don't know how this site works because i can't even figure out how to post a picture. anyone can help me?

My rooster "barks" sounds just like a dog, when something gets near it's cage he don't like. He also can make a sound just like a hawk he only does it when hawks are flying over. I think it is there way of warning there hens to take cover.

It looks like a Speckled Sussex to me. But their are a lot of breeds with those markings as a baby. I call them chipmunk markings because their back looks like a chipmunk!

Just don't let them give you a hard time about it now after you've become addicted and keep adding 'just one more' cuz you've always thought that breed was so pretty. You could even blame it on them..'well if you'd only let me keep my chickens when I was a kid...'

To the OP; my chicks will sometimes do that same thing, sometimes with a scratch to the throat. I always assumed that they were encouraging a stuck piece of something to go down.
