If I get chickens, will I have rats?

My kids have seen our chickens catch a medium sized rat in their run and kill it. Then the game of keeps away begins.

Yes! The one Mahroni suggested, Just One Bite. The chemical is bromadiolone.

Read the label. Most rat poisons are warfarin, a "blood thinner," also used in people with clot problems (I take it.) Warfarin will definitely kill whoever eats the dead mouse. Bromadiolone will not. I use Just One Bite all the time. It's not that difficult to prevent the chickens from eating it while making it available to mice and rats.

While bromadiolone is better than what is in d-corn (warfarin) it still can cause secondary mortality.

Both are anticoagulants, some rats have become warfarin tolerant bromadiolone will kill those rats.

When you use any poison you need to make certain the birds can not get to it and to any of the animals it has killed.

no you wont get rats or mice.
i feed my chickens my coop 24/7 i lock them in at night also i keep my feed in a metal trash can.

we have feral/getting tame cats in the nieghborhood i live on 4 ac tract that eats the mice for us.
go get some kittens and they will keep them over control for you.
