Glad I asked I've been telling them barred rock the hen is a Dom. I only have Red chickens & one rescued DOM.

Honestly if you are not sure: the hen's breed-

BYM, BarnYard Mix/ BarnYard Mutts

Mutts,

50% chance Brown Egg layer (M or F being the determination)

If you hatch from the dom hen, they are black sex links. Are your red hens RIR or production red or red sexlinks? If your hens and rooster are the same breed, you sell the chicks they will be that same breed, but your dom is the one that throws it off.

Purebred barred mom (whether barred rock or Dominique) + purebred red dad = red sexlink. By purebred, I mean has only those genes, breed doesn't really matter as long as they only carry 1 color genes. What were you telling them they were? You should be able to sex them at hatch. Females will be black, males will be black with a white spot on their head b/c they will be barred like mom when they're older.

Red roo over barred hen will be black sex-links, as mentioned. Sexable at hatch, girls black, boys black with a white spot on the head. Girls will grow up to be mostly black with some red on the neck/chest, boys will be barred like momma, but lighter usually.

Now , I'm totally confused I hate to use the name RIR on this forum but here goes what do you get when you hatch an egg from a RIR ROO & a Dom hen. The iddy's that I hatched twice now were black as mentioned .

RIR roo or NH roo and barred or Dom hen=black sex link. Chicks, at hatching, will be, male's, black with white dot on head, females solid black.
