If I use a styrofoam cooler for a bator

and then cut a hole in the top and put the light down into it will it melt the Styrofoam? Also a question about ventilation will a small hole in the side towards the top work out okay? Is it okay to put a piece of glass or plexiglass on the side for a viewing window? Is the fan supposed to be near the ventilation opening or can it just hang from the lid?

Sounds like you have a good plan. If you are worried about heat and styrofoam just put some foil up there.

I would imagine that if your bulb is hot enough to melt the Styrofoam then you're bulb is too hot. You want gentle heat rather than a blast. A blast that melts Styrofoam might cook an egg. Think about the boiling coffee that goes in a Styrofoam cup with no damage and then think about how you get a soft boiled egg.
