Please remember that all issues need to be taken care of privately and not on open forum.

If this transaction was in BST, please leave appropriate factual professional feedback through the listing. If this happened off BYC, you need to go through that site.

If you didn't use the BST section for this transaction, we are sorry you are not supported by the feedback system and BYC will not get involved nor will we allow public flaming.

I am so sorry for your experience!

Maybe a moderator would need to answer this question?

You are right that some breeders are profiting greatly off good feedback, but if there is a bad experience, they have it flagged and removed. 100 geese on 3 acres is no longer a backyard breeder. They are a puppy mill out for profits. You can't give personal attention to details that matter at that those numbers.

should be shipped as day old or if older just like you would any adult bird with "wet" foods like the ones RURU mentioned or Iain Utah used when shipping our adults.

I've received shipped adult birds without any problems. I've always heard babies either need to be shipped as day olds or wait until they are juveniles...

I paid with credit card. I immediately asked for my money back but she said she would not give it back to me if the post office did not pay the insurance claim. She said it says on her websight that they ( the breeder) are not responsible if the animals die in shipment. I do not see this anywhere visible. Regardless, I checked with other reputable breeders who say they never ever ship goslings older than 24-48 hrs as the goslings are too big and 48 hours (3 in a box about the size of a shoebox) is too hard on their organs without air, food and water. I flagged this post to see if the moderators have a position. I really believe this community should be transparent, and I hope that somehow honest feedback will benefit honest breeders and save us from repeated offenders who can take advantage again and again.

Have you considered contesting the payment through your credit card company? Explain to them what happened. Maybe they can help you get your money back. If the two goslings were in rigor that quickly, it should have been pretty obvious to the breeder beforehand that they were not fit for shipment. I went to a breeder that advertised once that listed all of these different breeds and stumbled upon a severe hoarding situation. There was a gutted mobile home inches thick with fecal matter, the water the poor birds were drinking was black, they had no pools for swimming and there were so many birds they were stepping all over each other and some were sick. Once we got there we showed interest in some of the breeds she advertised, at this point to rescue some of the poor things, and she told us what we could buy, but she was not selling most of what she had. We did buy four geese and two ducks to get them the heck out of there and show them a better life, and get them in superior health. It is a sad, sad situation when these types of things happen. If I were to ship, I too, would put some vegetation in there for them, no matter how old they were. We love all of our birds, even the ones that we sell, and I believe that makes a difference. If it were me, I would have refunded your money, and still offered to replace them for you with profuse apologies. I would have worried about the post office claim later, though I am doubtful it was their fault. I get a phone call even if it is in the middle of the night letting me know my birds are there, and if I want to pick them up then. If a breeder has a stipulation that they will not refund or replace, I would simply not do business with them. For me, that is a red flag.

Also, when they are older, it is better on them if shipped in the cooler months. That is what Holderread does. They have the breed you are looking for. Talk to them.

I will contest this payment with my credit card company. I also have proof that she changed her shipping 'policy' after this disaster, thanks to the byc community. I flagged this post and have not heard from a moderator so I'm taking this as tacit approval for total transparency. The breeder is Shellie Ross at Celtic Oaks in Merritt Island, Florida. It is amazing what you can learn about a breeder's reputation just by googling her name. I wish I had done so prior to ordering with her, as I would have been massively forewarned.

Holderead farms has been very patient and giving with their time and advice, and when I can undertake it it, I will be ordering from them, hopefully next spring.

The best move you could make. The peacock could be the Creator's way of showing you that good things are ahead.

Shalom and Blessings, Tshannon!

Wanita at Holderread's is very helpful and always answers my questions or addresses concerns in a timely manner. I've had a very good experience with them and highly recommend.

By using a Credit Card the Card Company are effectively the purchasers but they have a get out.
Did you pay her directly or use something dodgy like Paypal?
If Paypal the Credit Card companies can and do leave you high and dry because you elected to pay through an intermediary!

People get regularly screwed on Ebay by that particular little bit of small print!

You have not received goods fit for the purpose so if you paid direct
They should be able to issue you a refund on that basis and then deal with the seller to recover their money.

If they can't get their money (not yours) back then they may well suspend the sellers ability to accept credit card payments which can be bad for the seller business so there is an incentive for her to refund you

I think from your original post you could be suggesting two of the birds could have been dead or dying before even being posted that would be difficult to prove so you best just go with death in transit as ultimately the packing, the shipping method and transit time were under under the direct control of the seller.

Unless you specifically requested an alternative.

in the mean time as you were the recipient why don't you file for compensation with the post office anyway?
