My sisters eaten mealworms. Said they were kind of plain. Ate them alive too. (We have a mealworm farm) I didn’t want to eat one though.

It is a very hefty looking chick. Too young to actually sex, but often times the thick legged ones are cockerels (not a guarantee by any means). I'll tentatively go with cockerel and take your side!
