If you could only have 10 chickens...

So, if you start with 10 and then go to the swaps...how can you not add to the flock.
Meaning...I hear that you mess with the pecking order. I know that when I get my first 8 this Spring (day old peeps) I'll want to talk and be around the swaps to enjoy the hobby. From reading I'd like: Aussie, RIR, BPR,EE 2 of each.

I have 13...

4 buff orps
1 buff orp/RIR cross
2 black copper marans
3 EEs
2 RIR
1 SLW

When I start to replace birds...one less buff orp (the roo)
Speckled sussex or jubilee orps will come into the flock because I like the color.

I like big bodied birds, with calm natures that are visually appealing. The SLW is lovely, but unfriendly, and probably my weakest layer. The RIR and EE are probably the friendliest, and I like the look of the orpingtons, their winter laying, and their calm natures.

10 is really hard but the top of my list #1 Naked necks.

can't beat them lay a lot of big eggs in in the summer especially in winter, cold won't stop them.

what i currently have is

Orps * black, blue, splash and White*

BLRW * blue and splash *

Anconas * single comb *

1 ee br mix hen

and last but definitely not least

Naked Necks * white, red, splash, blackand blue * and eggs in the bator that would hopefully be BLRNN

me too!

You all are forgetting the bestest breed of all: Polish!!

I'd have about 6 polish, a couple of Ameraucanas, a pair of Silver Spangled Hamburgs, and . . . .wait! That's 10? I don't like this game

Since my DH has already made his preference known - several times, as a matter of fact - I will be getting more brahmas in the spring. Brahmas have always been my favorite and now apparently they are his too. I may try to slip a few minorcas in with my brahma order. I am in love with my little minorca that I got by accident. She was purchased as a sex link.

Using chicken match, I figure 10 as ten pens of birds. I can do that (almost).
