if you have silkie hatching eggs or know someone who does LOOK HERE

Wow all these people have GORGEUS silkies. I guess i wouldnt mind spending 5$ an egg if it came from a nice BYC'er who i knows takes care of the parents. I will not need any more than 12 eggs because of the coop i already have built for them. I think i can hold about 15 silkies because they are bantams but i would only want 12 at max.
Isnt buying and hatching eggs in the winter bad for them? I live in south georgia so it is usually hot. Any by usually it was a rare occasion this morning when it snowed!!! I live 10 miles from the florida line so it was kinda weird. Do you think it would be okay if i bought them sometime in the next month?

Now shipping is ALWAYS a risk-if you buy from a reputable breeder on BYC-which the majority are-we incubate all year long-no harm done -we brood in our houses or heated coops/brooders. Shipping in Winter is alot better than the heat of the Summer. I dont ship eggs when the temps are well below freezing for days on end-I wait until the cold snap moves then ship the freshest eggs eat the older ones-you should be fine if you ordered some next month-just look at the state that you plan on buying from ( usually people have their state listed under their names) If you can find a breeder near you-shipping will be a shorter distance and you will stay away from freezing temps during shipping. Just remeber though shipping is a gamble and you may get broken eggs-floating air cells etc..butttt you could also get beautiful birds for taking the risk on buying them:-) We ALL do it!!

yup very pet quality silkies-pretty but pet quality-and if thats what your looking for thats fine too -really it is ( shipping was 12$ too) that and her silkies are all thrown together-they dont look seperated by colors and you will get total mutts-which again-thats why so cheap...

ok well thank you for your help. I am gonna order silkie eggs as soon as i can. It all depends though. I am fencing in 2 and a half acres and getting katahdin hair sheep and a livestock guardian donkey. I am then going to let all my hens i have now free range during the day and build them another coop. ( hopefully getting a lot more chickens too. i want to because i only have 8 now and they are in a coop and covered run all day long until we get our sheep project fencing.) The coop and covered run i have now will then be used for just my silkies. I am excited but i just bought all my fencing last week and i know i will have all my fencing done by february and have all the sheep by march. Then i will let hens free range. So depending on how quick i can be at fencing and getting the sheep etc. i can possibly get the silkies by early feb hopefully

If i can be really speedy i may order them by the end of january because i know i have to hatch them which takes 21 days. Then they stay in the brooder for 5 weeks. So if i order the eggs at feb 1st then they hatch end of feb then they are in the brooder for 5 weeks end of march then by april i know will have everything done.

The only problem with them hatching in january is that i dont have a place to put the brooder that is warm. The only place i have is my garage but i guess it is warmer than just being outside.

Anyway i am SO excited

no spare room in house for the first 2 weeks? Shoot my hatches go in a huge tucker tote bin-they are so tiny when they are first hatched out- They are a piece of cake the first few weeks:-) then if they go in garage at a few weeks old its easier still as long as they still have a heat source-

I have BBS Silkies but no egg right now hope soon I have had a problem with them hatching but just got a new rooster so hoping that fixes the problem. I am in Hamilton Ga. I am going to hatch a few in my bator before I start selling them. www.redroofhens.com

You also need to be aware that for some reason, hatching out shipped silkie eggs seems more fraught with peril. I have had two batches sent to me by reputable breeders and got zero out of both hatches. I have shipped out a grand total of 27 eggs myself this season (to four different locations) and I think a grand total of 10 chicks hatched. Shipped eggs are difficult to start with and silkie eggs seem more susceptible to damage in transit. Ordering 15 eggs will net you maybe 6 chicks if you are lucky.

Good buff silkies are still somewhat rare. To get decent quality you should expect to pay a lot for them. Sundownsilkies has really nice birds and a good breeding program. Her prices are actually low considering the quality she has. Lavenders are really hard to find. White and black silkies seem a lot more common. You might try starting with those and go from there.

Good luck!

Ok thanks for the advice. I really dont want any black silkies as i have a lot of black chickens already and wanted some color. I only have 1 white chicken now and i only have 1 buff chicken now.
I have found some good deals on silkie eggs here on BYC. I found one good one on here and it was 24 eggs for 15$. The only problem was that it was white splash and black when i wanted mostly white and buff and splash is ok too. Do you think i could pm the BYC'er and ask her just to include white and splash.
