Bantam chooks
In the Brooder
Hello, we have a young pekin bantam, she's aprox 8 weeks.
The last few days she's been a bit lethargic but I was keeping an eye on her hoping it would pass but then suddenly today she was just minding her business and then she puts her head upside down and can't seem to bring it back up again. Eventually she got out of it. The first time it happened I watched becuase it looked like she was preening but when I saw her head upside down I got scared for her and she also seemed scared. I then bought her downstairs and while in my hands it happened again, I tried to nudge her a bit but she seemed... stuck? She came round and then I sat her on a chair. She seemed confused and a bit in shock and she didn't say anything. While she was sat on the chair we started googling possible things and came across wry neck. Her sister was calling for her so I bought her down and they started chirping and talking to eachother. She just sat there with her neck all tucked up and I wanted to see her strech it out so I got a treat and she went to get it but lost her balance and fell off the chair and then another upside down neck moment happened again. I then got a heat pad and she sat on it keeping warm and her sister stayed by her side. A few mins past and she was alright but she just sat there, minimal neck movement and she didn't want to walk. Then took them upstairs where its warmer and gave then a small pile of food amd she ate it alright but it was clear that she didn't want to move much. She continued to sit on the heat mat and they both got comfy and sat there. She didn't have another upside down neck moment again so I put them back in their enclosure and the healthy one started foraging and eating while the ill one seemed lethagic again and just wants to rest. But I held a mealworm and they both tried going for it so she's still got her appitite.
They're on chick crumb and have been on the same one since we got them. Only difference within the two weeks is that i've started introducing them to the outside world. Putting then in with the other (2) girls. They don't mind the chicks but one of them will peck if they get too close. Could she have caught something from being outside? Or a nutritional deficiency?
We in the UK so weather is still cold and rainy so maybe she's got the chills? They spend between 1-3 hours out there every few days but ONLY when i'm home so I can jump in if something bad happens. Long post sorry but I thought it was important to have some back story. Thank you if you have any possible ideas or know what's up.
