ill chick help please

my chick had like matting round its mouth and eyes where closed he has some laboured breathing and is half the size of his twin {brother/ sister} and doesnt seem to want to feed or drink its mother has abandoned him/her and are now trying to rear by hand please help

it could be 1 of many things a vitamin A defiency, it might be mycoplasmosis(a respitory diease) or maybe a bacterial diease

Answers to questions like these.
How old is your chick? Do you have it in a warm place with the correct temp. for it's age? What are you trying to feed it? Is the chick able to get around or is it laying down and staying in one place?

liguid vitamins and electrolytes are reccomended by many on this forum, however, I do not know the dosage or the type.

like verthandi said is keep it warm for its age 95* for first week of life minus 5* for each week after that.

then I would suggest giving a little scrambled egg and yogurt.

need some details..
what do you mean by "matting"?

follow the suggestions posted about keeping the chick at proper temp.


what are you feeding the chicks?
are you giving chick vitamins?
describe the droppings..color and consistency..
have you tried dipping it's beak in water to show it how to drink?

if you have no chick vitamins on hand, you can give Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins (Enfamil brand, no iron)..1 or 2 drops once a day on the beak (so it runs down into mouth) for a week or so, then taper off..
in the meantime, try and get some chick vitamins.

well the chick had some kind of problems it died last night but the other chick and mum are doing fine it was reared in a seperate pen from the other chickens with its mum on grass with a laying box as home we always move the pen around on to clean grass soon as we think it needs it i think it may of got something to do with some straw that was wet in the pen after reading up on it. it was only 9 days old it was getting chick crumb and bas cour mix wich is a multi grain mix.

Sorry you lost the little one, the straw does sound like a possibility.

If you feel up to talking, I have a question. What is bas cour mix? Is it whole mixed grains, like we might call "scratch" feed here?

its a general feed mixed corn oats etc its got chicks on front of the bag
