ill hen -- sour crop / vent gleet?

Hello,

One of my ISA browns is looking really rough this morning. She is isolating and puffed up, with a gurgling sound when she breathes and a squishy crop. When I held her a bit sideways, some liquid came from her mouth. She also seems to have some poopy butt, as does her sister (who is otherwise acting normal). I'm going to buy some Monistat suppositories to give pieces of orally and perhaps an antibiotic? I would really appreciate advice on a specific course of treatment. I have one other hen in the coop, as well, and am curious if she needs any preventative treatment. Would probiotics in the water be helpful? Plain yogurt? Thank you all so much.

Have you raised ISA browns before? Since they are such prolific layers they are more prone to some issues. They might not be getting enough nutrition from normal layer pellets to keep up with their egg laying which may cause them search out questionable things in the yard which in turn can lead to sour crop... Obviously I don't know if that's the issue here, but it's something to keep in mind. Hope your girl recovers

I would absolutely treat for sour crop as @Tookie has suggested, read the whole article including the comments section. Make sure to give the medication twice a day for a full 7 days even if she seems better.
Follow up with some probiotics.
Do consider getting a fecal float to see if worms are part of the issue. Often a crop not emptying is a symptom of an underlying condition (worms, coccidiosis, infection, reproductive disorders). Having a partial blockage can be common as well.

IT WORKED! One dose of Monistat by mouth and she was back to her usual self the next morning. (I know to do the full 7-day treatment, of course.)
