two suggestions 1st. like others have said I'd go for a young adult Rooster and let him PICK YOU thats the most important thing. I let Red pick me and we were together for 8-9 years. and he was my Best Friend I lost him back on the 30th of last month and I'm still not over it yet. and 2nd. Try and find you an adult Frizzle Rooster they're alittle harder to find because as I've been lead to believe they don't breed true so you only get a fraction of a litter that'll be curly feathered but Red was incredible and smart to GOD was he smart. if your curious what a frizzle looks like go to my first post when I introduced myself, they are very pretty and Red was Mega Sweet although he had to do his cocky side winding me when I'd go out the door to prove he was a man/rooster lol.

as for what to do to make him your buddy and companion just involve him in as much time with you as possible pick him up and stroke him, break the casings off his feathers cause thats how most birds bond with each other is by preening each other, just love on him e.g. kiss him on his head and face and stuff, talk to him basicly treat Him like you would a dog or something along those lines. you can even train a rooster Red was smart. the most important thing I want to emphasize is LET HIM PICK YOU that is key in my experience over the last 16 years

I've Had lots of roos and never had a roo as bad as a RIR roo Spurred everything and was horrible however the 2nd roos that were the best are my cochin Roos and my orpington Roos

We hatched 5 australorps Thanksgiving weekend, so they are a little over 4 months old. At least 3 of them are roosters, possibly 4. So far they are much nicer than the Rhode Island Red rooster we got rid of last summer. They are fighting amongst each other trying to establish order, but they are nice to us so far. I have three little girls that are in there all the time and they haven't bothered them yet (I have warned them to be careful just in case they turn on them).

When I was growing up, our best Roo was a giant New Hampshire red. He was not a hatchery bird. I agree that temperment is bred. Now, my most docile Roo is a Partridge Rock named Tailfeather. He's awesome! I've had alot of RIRs that are tempermental. The one I have now was originally going to be a stew bird(along with several others), but I liked him so much that I decided to name him and keep him. Big Red has turned into the perfect Head Rooster. He is an exception to RIRs. He was already 2-2 1/2 when I got him. Definately get one that is already mature. That way you know what you are getting. I had Barred Rock Roos that were fine too. Bold at times, might peck you(but is being a rooster) but never mean. The Plymouth rocks have been the best I've had so far. I don't have any experience with Faveroles myself, but have heard nothing but good about them.

My 1st rooster was an adult game. He was so pretty with his red body and black chest. He was also the meanest rooster I ever had. Of course back then, I didn't know how to handle him and I wasn't aware of BYC. All his offspring were nothing like him(maybe took after their moms?), and if they didn't fight each other I would still have them.
I do have 1 game roo that has never tried to touch me, and I prefer it that way. He is for looks and breeding, not my pet. My WLH and RIR roosters are my pets

I use to sit out in the sun beside them when they took dust baths. My BO is also very nice.

I have 8 Sumatra Roosters and all are good boys. None of them are mean in the least. 2 of them (younger boys) like to fight with each other. I can walk between them, and pick one of them up to break up the fight. I hold him until he calms down...petting him. Sumatra's are the best!

I also really love my ameraucana roosters, have had four mature wheatens and a blue and all have been nice tempered roosters. The worst rooster I ever had was a RIR, a big handsome nasty rooster. Good luck.
