Illinois...

By day 18, there's not a lot of room for movement. Size is what matters. LOL

Good luck with your hatch!

BTW- My chicks are almost all out. Within 4 hours, 5 out of 6 hatched today. The last one is still working on it. (Just taking its time, I see no evidence of distress, so I must sit on my hands.) This is the 1st year I didn't get an earlybird. In fact all are exactly one day late. (Perhaps the last one is trying for 2 days late.)

Congrats on your hatch Faraday! And I have to agree with you, size does matter. LOL. The olive eggs does have a saddle shaped air sak, so we will see. I have the saddle side up.

My last chick hatched. A pure Lavender Orpington!

So my broody snatched 7 eggs. One was infertile.
Eggs moved to incubator, so broody could be used for our experiment.
At lockdown 6 eggs went into hatcher.
All 6 hatched.

Hope my daughter's project goes as well.

Getting excited, tomorrow is hatch day and my hybrid CCL x Buff Orp egg is a rocking and chirping, can't wait! I also couldn't help myself and ordered some Blue/ Black/ Splash Cochin! Eggs should be arriving soon.

Since you are hatching your own chicks, are you aware that Trader Joe sells fertile eggs and peeps have been hatching them successfully. Trader Joe is in our area. There is a thread dedicated to it here also.

I don't do any hatching, because I don't have needed equipment, but if I did, I sure would give it a try.

I have seen the thread, and have said next time I head out that way I was going to pick some up, just to try. I would love to get a leghorn and cross with my legbars. It would be fun, please cheaper than purchasing eggs from breeders. If you have a broody hen, you could sneak some under her, couldn't you? haha. Maybe we should do a traders Joe hatch a long?

It is supposed to be labeled as fertile eggs on carton. That is my understanding. Just free range does not mean there is a rooster around. =D=D=D . Anyways, this coming Sunday, I'm going to Kankakee Swap Meet. I will come home with ??????? LOL

The Trader Joes in Illinois do not sell fertile eggs. I did buy a dozen of their "Free Range Organic Brown Eggs" at the Naperville store to attempt for the Easter Hatchalong. They were all clears.

Yes, I wanted to try this experiment but the IL trader joes does not sell them. Perhaps Whole foods.... I once got some free range eggs eggs at a nearby mom&pop type store. (I needed 40+ eggs for my students & my 7 hens weren't up for the task. LOL) As I cracked them open, I kept seeing the bulls-eyes. (I didn't incubate them b/c they were purchased for a different kind of lab.) However, I think buying eggs from a farmer's market would work well too. Definitely cheaper than eBay.

Junibutt, an Illinois BYCer, called Trader Joes to see which stores in the Chicagoland area carried fertile eggs. He was told that they do not sell fertile eggs in their stores here. I tried the "Free Range" eggs just as an experiment......in case there was a rooster "free ranging" with the laying flock

You could end up with all sorts of things from that Swap!
