Illinois...

@chickendreams24 hey! We've got 2 Cayuga ducks, 1 Golden laced Wyandotte, 2 silver laced, 1 golden laced Cochin, 1 dominique, 1 australorp, and 1 buff orpington. This is our first year having ladies! Also forgot I just got two seramas! Inside we have 2 cats and 2 dogs!

When it gets REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELY COLD , you may need to bring the Seramas inside for the night. I had a few and know there just is not very much mass in these birds. In my avatar is one that I no longer have. Other seramas , I lost due to respiratory issues.

@cavemanrich i got them a cute little coop for the garage! They'll be alll set! I figured I'd have to bring them in they haven't been introduced to my others yet they're still in quarantine in our garage

@cavemanrich at what temperature do you advise I bring them in? Should I keep them in there all winter? Did you ever let your seramas with the flock? To free range? Or did you keep them in a run?

Had a lot of excitement Thurs night. The kids & I went to help DH with a client's office move & brought the guys some pizza. It was a fun time & the kids were put to work crawling under furniture, disconnecting cables, & wrapping up cords. (We're going back tonight to help unpack at the new office...)

Anyway when driving home as we turned onto our block I could smell skunk, and it kept getting stronger the closer we got to our house. When we went out back, we discovered that our dog had chased a skunk under the coop where it got trapped. (Dog got sprayed multiple times of course.) I kept hearing "Thump Thump Thump" coming from under the coop as the skunk was trying to spray everything. It was frightened & every time a chicken moved, auto motion light went on, or a dog barked, we heard thumping = spraying. Just not a good place for a skunk to be. DH was working 'til 10pm, so I called our handyman. We put the hose on full & sprayed the skunk until it ran out....... Of course it ran toward the front of the garage where our smelly dog pounced on it again, got sprayed again, & the skunk ran back under the coop -again. The garage door was open, so it smells very bad in there. Probably from the dog walking through as well as the spray incident. After more hose work the cold, wet skunk finally ran off toward the back of the property & away from the dog. This dog getting sprayed by a skunk is nothing new. We store several quart bottles of H2O2, boxes of baking soda, & Dawn. I got a lot of the skunk smell off the dog, but the garage & dog have a ways to go.. The kids got to stay up late & help contain the dogs until the skunk left.

We're skunk free right now, but it may take a good 2 weeks for the neighborhood to air out! And here's my question of the day:
How do you get skunk oils out of a dog's mouth?
(His face isn't too bad & last fall we had to do saline spray in his eyes for a week until the smell & redness went away)

I swear I smell strong skunk odor every time he's flapping his tongue around. He licked & cleaned his fur which seems to make him smell worse as time goes by. He actually smelled better the morning after than he does right now. Does anyone here have experience with this issue?

Oh goodness! Well I don't have easy answers for this. We felt with this last year and it was bad! She seemed to have inhaled it into her sinuses and all over in her mouth. We of course flushed out her mouth with dish soap water which she seemed to enjoy and thoroughly rinsed her eyes and mouth. Of course her sinuses were a lost cause and her breath was toxic for weeks maybe months. Any time she panted heavily you just about gagged. Lol

That being said we did greenies and rawhides and doggy breath mints. Which did seem to help. Unfortunately every time she got wet for a few months you could still catch a small whiff.

We should invent a doggie skunk removing mouth wash we'd be billionaires! But how to get them to gargle... ;) lol

I asked DH2B if he could remember what else we did hopefully he remembers more. Hope this helps. I know we did a lot of saying don't breather on me go lay down lol it was always worst when she was being sweet and excited and happy to see us. You know great Danes have a lot of breath lol.

Wow, what a nightmare...

Can't say I have much advice for improving the dogs breath beyond getting some of the breath refreshing treats and chew bones...

As for the other areas, I have a few suggestions...

I hear Nature's Miracle Skunk Remover does wonders, I picked up a bottle of it earlier this year off Amazon, but knock on wood even though the dog has spooked a few skunks this year he has avoided getting a direct hit so I have not used it as of yet...

For general purpose cleaning and even dog cleaning, you can try what I have used to remove cat urine smell since it's all organic odors the same enzymes work on skunk spray...

Go get some of this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Septic-Tank-Treatment-9.8-oz/35326675 I recommend the Walmart brand as it's dye free, from what I have read some of the name brand ones like RIdX have dyes in them, so avoid dyed ones... Anyway since the enzymes are so small the septic stuff is some sort of fibrous flakes soaked and coated with the actual enzymes you want, so seep the flakes in warm water and it will extract the enzymes into that water, you can discard the flakes after seeping... Note these enzymes are non-toxic and there is no 'chemicals' or toxic stuff in the septic treatment as that would violate EPA laws... Next get some of this http://www.homedepot.com/p/OdoBan-1...urpose-Cleaner-Concentrate-911061-G/202560626 mix that into the enzyme filled water, and then add some hydrogen peroxide to the mix... You now have a DIY pet odor killing cleaner for far less per gallon cost of proprietary pet odor cleaners, and from my research has many of the same ingredients as proprietary mixes... You can use this odor eliminating mix as is to clean the dog and pretty much any other surface, even carpets, the longer it stays 'wet' the longer it works as it gives the enzymes more time to break down the organic odors... I have used a pump sprayer on carpet, spraying every hour or so for the entire day to keep it moist but not soaked and it did wonders on cat urine odors after 24 hours... You can also add isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to the mix for cleaning inanimate surfaces like carpets or walls, the alcohol will help break down any organic oils and allow the enzymes to work better and faster... Obviously avoid adding the alcohol if using it to clean the dog...

BTW, the enzymes found in septic treatment are the same exact enzymes found in most all 'enzyme' based cleaners like laundry detergents and such, so even though the name and use of the product as a 'septic treatment' is 'yucky' the ingredients are not, you are just getting them in concentrated form...

Wish I had some advice to give. The only thing I could think of to help get rid of the bad breathe would be some garden fresh mint or parsley added to his dog food perhaps. Or maybe a mint extract added. I make our dogs food, and have never seen mint on a "do not feed to dogs list" but you should check to make sure. Good Luck
