Illinois...

It's amazing how fast they go from "tiny babies!" to "tiny babies with personalities!" :) And oddly enough, the one who keeps running away from us (brooder cleaning, water/food changes, butt checking) is the one with a reputation for being sociably easy to handle - the buff orpington. Hehe. She'll get used to it, I suppose... eventually?

well if your talking wing feathers, my pullet blue marans develop their wing feathers faster than the boys

I have no clue what breed any of my chicks are.lol I think that just adds to the excitement of the whole thing. I can't hardly wait to see what all I have.

It is sooo exciting! It kills me waiting though, to see if they are pullets or cockerel. I think I am getting better at figuring out pullets and cockerels but not an expert yet!

In some breeds, the faster growing wing feathers = females. Not always 100%, but it gives you something to guess with.
In other breeds (as I found out with my English orps), it doesn't mean anything. With those I can't even begin to guess until 5 weeks.

I had one friend tell me it would be easier to tell in about 2 weeks. I will be bugging him to come over and tell me what he thinks lol.

I have been trying to wing sex them. On the marans it is pretty clear 3 pullets and 1 cockerel, but on my Lavender Ams I keep checking especially since I think I keep seeing 3 boys and 1 girl, hoping I am wrong. They aren't feathering as fast as the marans. I guess I will be waiting too, they are only 1 week old.

@Junibutt I think I have a brown orp, it is so tiny compared to the ones that hatched last week. Tried putting her in the brooder with the other chicks and that lasted all of 2 minutes. The Lav Ams are a little rough on her, so I had to put her in a separate brooder and I put in the marans pullets with her. They are being nice to her so far.

These are the lav ams and the bbmarans .

My BBMs and a little Brown Orp, if you can spot her!
