Illinois...

I have been trying to wing sex them. On the marans it is pretty clear 3 pullets and 1 cockerel, but on my Lavender Ams I keep checking especially since I think I keep seeing 3 boys and 1 girl, hoping I am wrong. They aren't feathering as fast as the marans. I guess I will be waiting too, they are only 1 week old.

@Junibutt I think I have a brown orp, it is so tiny compared to the ones that hatched last week. Tried putting her in the brooder with the other chicks and that lasted all of 2 minutes. The Lav Ams are a little rough on her, so I had to put her in a separate brooder and I put in the marans pullets with her. They are being nice to her so far.

These are the lav ams and the bbmarans .

My BBMs and a little Brown Orp, if you can spot her!
She really is tiny. Is she a chocolate or mauve? you still have some chocolate/mauve eggs going right?

No I don't have anymore eggs. Blown air cells, ONLY 4 were fertile, and on day I think 10, 3 had bloodrings. She is the only one that made it. I think she is a chocolate. Also, isn't the Marc Sacre line of Orps on the smaller side? She had that line of hens over a LF (? I forgot what line) Roo.

I am not sure which one, but you are right one of those lines is smaller, pretty much the size of a standard hen.

Don't sweat too much, you have hatched and are getting some great chicks. And if you have the urge for more chocolate you know where to get them

Now if only that person will have a good hatch. Fingers crossed!

OkeyDokie...

I picked up 4 more baby chicks at Belmont Feed yesterday. About 9p I tucked them under the wings of my 2 broody hens.So far... It seems to have worked out well! The broodies have left their nests to care for the chicks. All 4 chicks seem close to bothe new moms. Both moms seem to accept all 4 chicks. the chicks were taking turns climbing on the moms and hopping from one to the other. The 6 hens a laying did their thing with nary a glace at the babies. Juniper Martini Martin Marty Jimbo Mick Jager laRoo came in quietly to see what was up, inspected and tasted the chick feed and went back to the big girls.

Pretty darned cool way to add to the flock (Now @ 13)!

Well, how SWEET is that! Congrats on the new additions and the smooth move you used to break the broodies!

Good Luck on that hatch! My fingers are crossed for you too! And NO, I cannot get anymore chicks and if I ask you for 1, tell me absolutely not!!!!! Stop enabling, LOL.

but how can you say "No" to these?

or even these? (These are the almost 7 week old siblings to the lav orp you have. By now you should be able to tell the gender.)

Just kidding. I hope all is well with you. DD's last day of school was today & DS finishes on Tues. SUMMER!

Hahahaha Faraday. They are all beautiful. I think I have a serious problem. I have a confession, I haven't told anyone except my husband, that I had another moment of weakness a couple of weeks ago and bid on a auction for some silver laced and frizzle bantam cochins. At the moment after I bid, I said why did I do that, then I thought to myself, well Papa Brooder is the other bidder, he will outbid me. Welllll, he was busy putting his children to sleep and guess who won the auction. The silver lace got me. So, I am coming out now, I have 5 eggs that have made it to day 14 and they will be hatching in a week. Plus the project Silver laced blue Orps that went into the incubator today, (which worried me because they began to sweat in the incubator) and the 6 Blue Orps I will be getting from Papa Brooder in a week or 2. All of that on top of the 9 I just hatched and the 4 juveniles in the garage. I am in trouble, I better order some shipping boxes!
