Illinois...

For those who know my family (& even those that don't), please keep my sister & our whole family in your thoughts & prayers.

She is in poor health & lives with my elderly father so he can take care of her. She's been having all kinds of R.A. (arthritis) problems, got put on steroids, & then her diabetes went crazy. (Sugar numbers over 600!) The past week she's rapidly been unable to use her arms. (Went to 7 doc offices & 2 hospitals in the past 10 days.)

Today she had trouble getting out of bed, fell 2xs & could not get herself up. After the 2nd time, Dad called 911. She's in the ER now. The docs there believe she has some type of internal bleeding & is undergoing a battery of tests. Because my kids have been sick with sinus issues, I have been keeping my distance to prevent passing something along. (In her weak state, she catches everything.) Thankfully my brother is there now to help my dad.
Sending hugs and prayers

It was delicious! And thank you all for the welcome. I can see how this becomes addicting. If it werent for the county ordinance I could easily see myself getting out of hand. I love my little ones so far. My wyandotte is turning into a bit of a wild one, mostly because she is the most curious and always the first to check things out. The rest are just so sweet and seem to like being held so far. I pick them up and they all just lay down in my hand. I already found myself asking the hubby if we could have a secret seventh illegal chicken because I wanted a silkie ;)

Hi and welcome! We are also in mchenry county unincorporated (north CL) with our six gals. Wishing for more land and more chickens though!

Oh i dont envy you that trip! The few times we drove over before moving and on actual moving day it was too long! Too much traffic. But Okemos is really nice. I am actually missing going to the maple syrup festival at Fenner Park. The maple cptton candy and rootbeer were so good.
MAPLE COTTON CANDY!!! :drool Never heard of it but it sounds delicious! ...and :welcome
:lau That's exactly how DD talked us in keeping a Sebright! "But Mom, this little one shouldn't count because she's too small to be considered a real chicken." DD did have a point. The Sebright doesn't even take up any space on the roost. She literally sleeps above all the other hens & takes over the window sil. ....and now she just hatched 3 silkies! Yes, that chicken math can surely add up fast.
I really don't think the bantams count myself and the oegb we have are even smaller than our sebright Lacey. They're so darned cute.

RE My sister:
History:
For a few months my sister's been complaining about pain in her hands, wrists, & can't hold on to things. (Ie a coffee mug suddenly crashes to the floor.) About a week ago she had intense pain in her forearm + wrist & went to ER. The ER thought she had tendonitis & that was causing her pain & why she kept dropping things. Weakness & lethargy was probably due to her overall poor health /a cold.
Next day her reg doc thought that it seemed more like a tissue tear. Also diagnosed bronchitis. Sent her to the pulmonary doc, the arthritis doc, & the diabetes doc. The steroids she was given made her sugar skyrocket above 600. She needed to take them for her lungs as well as her arms, so more insulin prescribed to compensate.
When her pain moved into both arms, the arthritis doc said it was likely uric acid in the joints = gout. (I guess it's common with RA.) My dad had to help feed her because her hands were useless. On Sat she was not herself, out of it, & fell 2xs. Dad called 911 & the ambulance brought her to the closest hospital. The ER thought she may have internal bleeding, but by then she had sepsis & things were critical. They did an amazing job & gave emergency dialysis.
Today's Update:
I went to the ICU today & although she still had many tubes, she was breathing on her own. While I was there they upgraded her to allow ice chips by mouth. She could talk & open her eyes. She was having random twitches & some confusion, but still much better than yesterday. Today was mostly spent keeping her stable & hopefully tomorrow they can do some tests to figure out the cause. So far her readings are holding steady. Another good sign..... She asked my dad to bring her hair brush from home. LOL

Glad she's doing a little better! Our prayers continue. Thank you for the update. I know it's easy when a loved one is in the hospital but don't forget to take care if yourself too. Hugs :)

we have had a chick since December that at first seemed a failure to thrive now I'm not sure.

It has grown slowly but steadily. She has never been thin before but has not even finished feathering and part of her underside is naked. She has in fact had quite a lot of breast meat.

At this age she is about the size of an average 8 week old chick. Despite this she has been completely healthy. She is a chocolate cuckoo English Orpington. At this point I feel sure it's a pullet although her small size and such could of course make a cockeral develop slower.

Mid last week she began holding one eye slightly closed. We looked and it appeared okay but we did treat it with terramycin opthalmic ointment. By Friday her eye was extremely swollen and she wasn't eating or drinking on Friday that we saw. Because of this we immediately pulled her into the house.

We began supportive therapy including force feeding water and electrolytes and then Friday night after we had rehydrated her with a syringe we did the same with feed.
Her eye in spite of the treatment had become massively swollen and ulcerated. Her eye was shut but not goopy on Friday and Saturday. Saturday she showed a little interest in drinking on her own and even in wanting the syringe of feed. She had been very lethargic on Friday so I was thrilled.

She has no symptoms of respiratory illness that we've seen and now has her bad eye open. It was extremely hot to the touch on Friday and especially Saturday. We have been giving her shots of tylan 50 in addition to the eye ointment.

There is no smell. Her bad eye appears to have some scar tissue or something on the lower half of it and I'm wondering if she was injured somehow or of this is a symptom to an illness that we need to worry about.

Her other eye is now also being treated (completely separate so as not to cross contaminate it from the other) as she is holding it partially closed. It is not swollen nor red, hot, or oozing either. The first eye is still swollen and very red but not so hot as it was. I am worried she may have been having such trouble because she was half blind from her eye and that is why she rapidly lost a lot of weight between last Wednesday and last Friday.
She is being fed a soaked wet show bird game bird starter for the high protein level with a small ammount of applesauce in the mix for ease of eating. I mix this up and then handfeed it to her with a spoon. I mix it very moist to supplement her water intake as she isn't currently drinking on her own she has problems finding it.

Two of her hatch mates have died in the last month or two from unknown causes. Both very large healthy chicks. One had no symptoms we saw until she was suddenly dead. The other was unable to stand but not paralyzed and rapidly lost weight but continued to eat and drink until the end. Neither of them had any respiratory or eye involvement.

We have never had any experience with Marek's disease, but it doesn't seem to fit to me. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also none of the rest of the flock have any symptoms of anything going on. Also the rest of the juveniles she was raised with are entirely healthy and active.
