Illinois...

Well all ten eggs hatched and will post pics when everyone is dried and fluffed. Looks like McDreamy (my Black orp)is the father to all. And I think I accidentally hatched 2 of my buff orps eggs. Oops. The Jubilee are growing so fast. Here is a pic of a pullet and a cockerel.

Actually we are often told that Cookie is the rare nice chihuahua haha. The vet even loves her, after pulling 3 teeth the whole office wanted to keep her. They said she was too cute and sweet to go home haha. She is a sweet little cuddle bug.

Last night I was reading a post about Speckled Sussex and someone shared a picture of a particularly pretty one. I showed husband the picture and said I would like one of these one day. He then said why dont you get one now? At first I just kind of looked at him, waiting to see if he realized what he just said. He didnt. I then said cuz we are out of space, and he just goes oh yeah. I should have gotten this ear infection in the beginning. Chick care is wearing him down and I think he has caught the bug a bit now. It was all very funny.

Sorry, but posting more chick pics. I ended up with 2 pure silver laced, so apparently, Mr Wonderful did sneak a couple of girls! These were the 2 I thought were the buff's chicks because of the yellow I saw when they were wet. So happy I got at least 2 SL. 2 split to Mottled and looks like the rest are pure blacks or blacks split to silver laced. The Jubilees and Mottled are getting so big in comparison, so they will be separated for a while. The chocolate cuckoo is beginning to feather out ahead of the SL/Black, and they are enjoying all the new company.

There's someone on BYC (@Johnn ) that takes amazing pics of his SS "Dorothy." That hen is a big reason why DD & I wanted to get one. She orig wanted a Jubilee Orp, but that's out of our price range right now and the SS should give us more eggs.

Ours is in the awkward teen stage right now.

Your pics aren't making it easy for me to avoid adding more orps.
..... and just look at that pile of unhatched chicks in the background!

Should I feel bad for passing along my chicken addiction?
Today someone came by to buy up our quail. He already has chickens, so he was only interested in the quail. After buying the quail & driving away, he returned and asked to buy our extra silkies too.

@ChicagoClucker I love the chick pics! Dont apologize for adding them.. I thought that was kind of the point of this whole website? I seriously love that first chick. SO cute.

@Faraday40 I am beginning to think he will now let me have whatever chickens I want. We were just outside with them all and the neighbor on the right came over to talk to us about them. She loved them. Turns out the people on her right have A LOT of chickens too haha. She said that's part of why they picked this area, people who are doing their thing. I guess last neighbors they had were tattle tales. She wants to get goats and I may have nearly convinced her to get some ducks. She hates that there are rules about what we can and can not do with our yards. She said as long as we take care of them she doesn't care how many there are. She will get eggs as soon as we get some I decided. I was also informed there is a grape vine behind the shed in our yard. Who knew? I am curious to check that out this summer.

Well if you want a boy... I am sad to have to get rid of my Speckled Sussex, I was definitely looking forward to the breed. Someday...

I joined my two brooder boxes up today and my week-old Welsummer chick ran straight up to the window (separated by wire still) and pecked at my 5-week-old Australorp's face. Lol! The acclimating begins!

Yeah... I cant have boys and just had to rehome two little D'uccles. I am in Mchenry county, Lakemoor. Our neighbors are down with the chickens and ducks, but not a rooster which is fair. And that sounds like the same attitude our Welsummer has. She is called Sassy, and it suits her very well.

Hello all,

It's lovely to see Illinois so well represented. I had originally wanted to spend some time scrolling through this thread to get to know you all better. Needless to say with 7000+ replies I can tell that you like chickens...which is pretty much all I need to know!

I'm from the north-east-central part of the state. Along with the chickens (a mix of Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, and White Rocks. And maybe a Delaware), I also have a flock of Cayuga ducks and a herd of huacaya alpacas.

On the plus side, I'm never bored.

It's great to be here and I can't wait to learn more!

Leslie
