Illinois...

If anyone is interested I have decided to not raise my bantam cochins any longer. I have 5 hens, 4 blue mottled and 1 black mottled but has the 2 chocolate chicks which are 6 weeks old.
Oh no. Are you sure? Yours are the cutest cochins around. Have you decided to go full orp????

I am just going to keep my LF, which are mainly Orps. I do have my 2 Isbars, 2 marans and legbar. I will also be looking for a home for my black orp cockerel, if your interested.

Ok, showed husband the funny pic of the Russian Orloff that Faraday posted. He said what is that thing with the beard? I said that is the chick you liked so much.
He says NOT ANYMORE. :barnie

Pft. She is BEAUTIFUL. (My husband agrees haha)
I think we are gonna let them have fence free meeting time out in the yard today and see how it goes, fingers crossed.

Molting quail ?s- for anyone who knows quail...

My 1st few 3 quail (from Thanksgiving hatch) are molting. No eggs & their tiny feathers are just dropping everywhere. Is this about the right age (6 months) or is molting more seasonal? My quail hatched in March & April are doing well & laying fine.

So how long does the molting last?
Will they go back to laying when done or will production be very low afterwards?
About what age do female quail usually get "retired?"
(DD's attached to the 1st 3, so I have a feeling they'll be pets. If so, how long do they live?)

Oh I forgot to mention.....
We had 1 pip this morning, 6+ pips at dinner, & an incubator filled with eggs due to hatch tomorrow. We also have a few middle school girls sleeping over. (Gonna be a long night. LOL)

A busy night & morning.
12 chicks hatched already. 1 lav, 1 blk female EE, 2 blk cuckoo (males), & 8 choc cuckoo .
Wow! :eek:Brick has been a very busy boy! (Only 2 of those 10 came from Godiva.) The other 8 were from my lav orps. Although hoping for many lavs, I suppose the good news is that 6 of those cuckoos are female.

Wow! Brick has been very busy indeed! :wee

Its also interesting that they are accepting his sperm and rejecting others'. This could be a liking factor because he is nicer to them but also some studies say that when there are multiple roosters, hens tend to reject sperm of roosters closely related to them. Well who knows? Nature knows best.

And its good that you have a sex linked cross now with the Lav girls. Black cuckoo boys and choc cuckoo girls. Hopefully the size issue would be resolved in this cross as well.

I have at least 1 chick hatch under the broody. He/she is running around so I am worried the broody may leave the eggs that are due tomorrow. Lets see!
