I grew up in Northern IL but now live in the West Central part of the state. Land values in parts of the Northern IL are crazily inflated compared to what they are downstate. We have 4.5 acres with a house, 2 car detached garage and a 2 story barn that we paid $65,000 for.

you could move outside of decatur, look up the apts in oreana or argenta they are close to decatur and are small town living

I am in Metamora, trying to find a farm, and wow land is stil pricey here, but not as bad as it is up in Dekalb, where I am from..

Macoupin county here I,m new here,,, But I have been learning alots from this site.... I had chickens yrs ago, but grandson has me back into them again...
we have24 RIR 24 WEEKS OLD....hens.... then we have 2BR 3 WHITE ROCKS
2 NEW HAMPSHIRE REDS roos they are about9 weeks old.....Happy to meet u all
