Hi all
I'm completely new to owning chickens and decided to hatch our own eggs.
We had 7 out of 9 hatch. We seem to have 3 with splay leg :-( is there anything I should be doing?
They are now over 24 hours old and seem to be getting to the food ok.

Also I have no idea what we have hatched. If I post some pics could anyone have a guess for me?

Thanks x

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Splay leg is treatable if it is done early. Just make certain that it is splay leg and not a slipped achilles tendon. The following links should help you out. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/02/spraddle-leg-in-baby-chicks-what-is-it.html, https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry As far as the breed of your chicks, they are awful difficult to determine when they are that young as there are so many chick breeds that look so similar. You might try posting the pics on our What Breed and Gender is This? section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this, and let our experts there take a crack at it. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in treating your chicks' splay leg.

Sorry about your little chick. Yes, definitely check out the link on Podiatry that Michael has linked for you. Here it is again...https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry

There is a section on hobbling them up when they have splay leg. It can take several days for them to gain enough strength that you can take the bandaid off.

Good luck with this baby and keep us posted on his condition! :-)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the problems with the chicks, hope they recover.

If you have a grippy surface in the brooder that gives them better footing. Sometimes they get splayed legs from being on slick newspaper. The hobble method with bandages works well for most chicks if you don't delay. Sometimes the feet straighten out as early as a day or two.
