Our first broody hen just hatched her first chick. We put a dozen under her when she went broody and 11 were still good a few nights ago. Today is day 19. One hatched out and is so adorable! Sadly, I found another one under her that was pulled out of its shell prematurely. The yolk had not been absorbed and it was opened and crushed. I'm guessing that she freaked out a bit and didn't know what to do and helped it out of it's shell. Looks like she waited for the second one, because it is safe and sound. Nine more eggs under her so we are waiting and hoping they will make it out safely. She acted so sweet to her little chick, tucking it under her and pecking madly at us when we picked it up. We will check her before bed and make sure she relaxes with the rest of the hatch. I hope that dead chick was just a new mommy jumping the gun.
