I just got 1 week old birds 3 weeks ago, It's amazing how fast they grow. I got the chickens before I had a built a coop, I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing. If I started building a coop without the chics I might have abandoned this thing, it's quite a daunting task for someone who is a marginal handyman. But as fast as they're growing it's motivating me to get the coop and run built!
I have a friend who has a small coop with 3 birds and that was my motivation to get some. So after a little research on the internet I got an old aquarium out of the the attic, bought the baby chicken accoutrements and went to a local hardware store that sells the newborns and got myself 4 of em. A barred rock, brown leghorn, rhode island red and a golden sex link.
I found this site while browsing for chicken related subjects and it seems like a good group and it's offered quite a bit of insight into raising the birds and building a coop. I have a dog who's a little skeptical of having these little things staying in his house for the time being but I'm sure he'll come around, theres also 4 feral cats that I've been feeding outside for several years whom I don't trust so I'm making sure these chickens will be well protected and hard to get to in their new coop!
