Hello,

I purchased a coop online and put it together. I think it's made of fir? The roof is of fir slats also. I'm wondering if anyone knows how this wood will hold up to rain this spring? My chicks are still inside (only 3 weeks old). I can put some shingles on it but I didn't want to go to the work if the wood will hold up okay. Thank you for any suggestions.

If you want better protection from the weather there is a clear coat type of polyurethane (I got mine at Home Depot) that is Non-Toxic and Hypo-Allergenic that is safe for animals and people. I used it in the interior of my coop and it works well. Application can be repeated annually or every six months, your preference. I forget the brand name but if you look on-line make sure you specify the non-toxic and Hypo-allergenic water protector/wood sealer, and I'm sure you will find it! The exterior can be painted with a good waterproof basecoat and an exterior grade paint. Just watch what you use on the inside. You don't want to harm your birds! Good Luck!

PS: If you use shingles, don't forget the tarpaper under the tiles for a complete seal.
