Hi! My name is Kelly and I just got my first flock the end of May. I received 5 but unfortunately lost 2 to a raccoon in July. I have since obtained and introduced 3 more to my flock. My birds are: Sage (a Whiting True Green), Atheena (Ameracauna), Freya ( a Red Star), Dimples (Black Austrolorpe), Karen ( Buff Orpington) and Jr. (a Barred Rock). The first three are from my first group and the last three are newer and slightly younger that the others. My older birds are approximately 18 weeks. I had them shipped from Murray McMurray when they were four weeks old but I am uncertain of their exact age when received (by approximately a week). None are laying yet but I know a couple of the breeds of the older 3 usually begin to lay much older than their current age and I am hopeful that one or two will begin in the next couple weeks.
We also have four dogs and a cat, including a chocolate lab, but none are aggressive toward the birds even when we are inside the house. We do keep an eye on them. We let them free age typically only when someone is home. I already love my birds and try to interact with them daily and 'handle' them when I can manage; I am looking forward to when they are happier being handled than they are right now.
I am very much looking forward to having this resource as I do my best to be a good chicken mama. My kids are all mostly grown (one with a masters and two close to graduating high school and I have wanted chickens most of my life............!
