I noticed a funky feather on one of my girls and discovered this long hard crusty thing on the back of my chickens neck. I soaked her and carefully removed it. It's eating into the back of her neck. I kept it clean but it looks like it's getting bad again. I'm wondering if I should attempt to remove again or euthanize. She acts fine when she's left alone, but when we pick her up to look at, she gets gaspy. I think when she puts her head down for us to look, it restricts her breathing.

This is also how it looked after I removed it the first time.

Welcome to BYC.Videos are usually uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, Imgur or a similar site, with a link posted here. A picture may also help. Could this be an ingrown feather? Now I am seeing the picture. What is the white material on the skin? I would clean this well, getting the white material off. You could explore the area with a sterilized needle to see if there is a feather or two under there.

Okay, this is what it looks like now. I'm not sure of the white material. It was stuck to the skin pretty good. I tried getting as much off as I could.

You can add a video by uploading it to yt or vimeo, or you can add it straight to the gallery on BYC
