I'm being outsmarted by Ninja Raccoon.

For two weeks this guy/gal has gotten into my chicken feed. My coop and run is like fort knox that God, so it hasn't gotten my chickens. He's been getting into the 5 gal bucket I use to store my chick start. How he gets that snap lid off is beyond me. He's also managed to get in there even after I put a bunch of bricks on top of the bucket with the lid snapped on. I finally got fed up and am now storing the feed on the other side of the yard in the shed (which sucks having to lug it back to the coop every day to feed the girls and boy). I set up the trap using the chick start as bait. I have left the trap exposed, I have covered it up, I have completely camouflaged it. Ninja raccoon is managing to get the feed, I think by reaching his arm through the metal and grabbing the dish with the feed in it.

What can I do to catch this guy? Any suggestions??

I'd try a leg hold trap if he is outsmarting the live trap. That is unless you have cats or dogs that might get into it.

I do have dogs and cats. So that's out of the question. I'm gonna try again tonight...I read another thread, and I think my problem is my choice of bait and the fact that when I camouflage it, it's not good enough. I also never anchored it down or enclosed the top, sides and back of the trap. So a little bit ago I did this...hopefully I'll get it tonight:

Try one of those dog-safe coon traps. They work like a dream and not risk to pets.

What's for my chocolate lab, Kalli's having for dinner. I'm not ready to try raccoon yet. I know how to tan though, so I skinned him and saved the pelt.
