I'm sure this is hardly an original sentiment, but I am stunned by how quickly those tiny peeps, 25 of whom fit into something the size of a large shoebox just last week, now have little feathered-out WINGS that they are eager to try out in the brooder...the rapidly "shrinking" brooder...which they seem to think is a runway for take-off. There isn't room to fly, and they go crashing into their buddies, causing a big commotion. As it's warm today, I have half of them in the yard in a dog crate, to give them more space, which they seem to be enjoying. I hope they don't outgrow the brooder before they're hardy enough to move to the coop.

Isn't it the coolest thing! To watch them grow is one of the neatest parts of owning chicks. I got two different batches of chicks a week apart and when I put the second batch in with the first, it was shocking to see the difference! Gotta love those little fuzzy butts!!

Its fun to stick a couple sticks in the ground wrap some chicken wire around it and let em loose and just watch them you start to figure out pullet and cockeral.

Hold them real close to your ear in a quiet room and you can hear the feathers grow. LOL. I guess they grow about 25% a day for several weeks but thats not scientific. Next time i get some i'm gonna weigh them daily to see how accurate that guess is. Congrats on your new fuzzybutts and welcome to BYC

I built my 10 girls a 8x2x2 run that I put them out in every afternoon when I get home from work, it has a hinged cover and screen 1 ft up on the sides because they were sticking their heads out and I was afraid one of the cats would grab them. mine love to take off and are busy hopping and flyiing around the pen. I spent about $50 on the materials and it took about 21/2 hours to build well worth the effort. I have designed a coop and will be building it this weekend so that it will be ready when they can move into it.

It's unbelievable! My 16 chicks are 4 weeks old and they are on their 3rd brooder. I hope the next move is into a smaller coop until the big coop is done. And boy do they like to eat!
