'Im building a new chicken run lol....

I've yet to see a permanent run that didn't become bare dirt eventually. Chickens scratch...it's their nature. I've read where a lot of folks put sand in their runs to help with drainage and give them something to "re-arrange". That's the main reason we decided to go with a portable coop/run. The coop should be finished in the next few days; in the meantime, we have a makeshift pen for them and move it about every 4 days or so. That way they're able to scratch and nibble but not to the dirt.

I would be skeptical to think there is a way to keep grass in a chicken run, if I were gonna attempt it though, maybe be ademate about throwing stuff in there each morning to attempt to draw their attention away from the grass like a few heads of lettuce or other stuff. Thats all I can think of, like I said though, I don't think its possible.

OK so I downsized on the chickens I have for now, I want to specialize in dark chocolate egg production next. So I'm down to 10 egg laying hens, 1 turkey and 1 rooster now. The grass is still green in there for now I just have to keep the sprinkler on for 20 min a day, let it dry out a bit and then I let them in the large run. Once the grass gets pecked low I'll keep the chickens in the smaller run until I can get the grass to grow back where it should be again. Anyways the corral chicken run is working beautifully! I'm glad we did it because its fully movable and If I need to I can move it where ever I want them to go. I just need to buy a portable coop for them now.

All the grass still looks good. We have sold some chickens off and are left with 10 and we got 3 ducks. Anyways long story short we still have grass and its still looking good and green. Maybe its all the watering weve been doing? Idk lol.

We keep grass in ours by separating it into 3 separate pens that we rotate weekly. You have a pretty big space there, if you have a lot of chicks, even having two spaces in which to rotate would be helpful. This is the view from above.

There is some threads on here about building boxes and planting grass and stuff in them for the chickens. You put a wire frame on the top of the box that way yhe chickens can get to the green part but not scratch up the roots.
