I have 15 week old red sex links. I'm hoping we're about to get some eggs. One hen her wattles and comb like overnight grew and turned red. I have golf balls in the nest box. I've seen conflicting advice on if you can eat the eggs while they're on medicated fee. I feed Manna Pro which is medicated with amprolium and bmd (bacitraein methylene disalicylate). I just bought a new 50# bag. So not just wanting to throw it out. I was told by members here to feed starter until they lay. We so want to be able to eat the first eggs. we're about to bust waiting. (our first chickens) I do give them yogurt every morning to help with the calcium. I know you can't give them too much calcium. So if ya'll can just point me in the right direction, and tell me what I should do. I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

humm, they start laying around 6 months. which is 24 weeks or sooo.....give or take

Give it to them until they lay or can you return the bag? Then they get layer formula. Yogurt everyday, not sure if that's good. i give it to mine 1x a week as a treat. Not as food!

You still have a ways to go, so try to get unmedicated feed. i believe you only give medicated feed until 16 weeks or so~ After that the threat of cocci decreases.

i am sure someone else will chime in soon

I have always fed medicated starter/grower right up till the first egg appears. Then I slowly switch them over to layer. I do it slowly so not to upset their digestive sysyems, and also because if you know anything about chickens you know that they hate anything that changes in their life!

I do 70% to 30% for a week, then 60-40 for a week, etc, etc.

We always eat the eggs during this time.

We are still kickin'.................

Thanks Superior chicks. That's the way we planned on doing it, but then I read a couple of posts that confused me. Didn't want to make any of my family sick. So thanks for the info

I'm in the same boat as you! My chickens are 15 weeks old and I couldn't get any unmedicated starter/grower so I had to buy a 25LB bag medicated for 2 chickens. I plan to switch them to the layer once they start laying and donate the remainder of the feed to someone else. We also would like to eat the first eggs but I am not very comfortable eating eggs while they are on the medicated feed.

It's just the opposite where I live. The feed store doesn't stock any medicated feed at all. If a customer wants it they do a special order.
When I bought POL pullets I put them straight onto layer pellets.

My girls are 18 weeks. Two weeks ago I started a 50-50 mix of the medicated grower and layer food. The next time I go in (next week) I will get a mix of flock raiser (for the higher protein) and layer and keep them on that until they are all laying and then I will switch over to all layer.

Personally I use medicated only for the first 2-3 weeks. THen I switch to non medicated grower. Feed that till laying starts and then layer pellets. I am not a true organic follower but I believe in the less medication for the birds, the better it is for me. I would take back the other bag and get off medicated but thats me.
