I bought some starter crumbles from a local mill and put it in a ceramic crock pot crock. I crushed up about 4 probiotic pills and added it to the feed then added 100-110 degree tap water that I had boiled. I also added a pack of activated yeast which I had fed and watered. This was Wednesday night. I have been stirring and adding water as needed. Today the water on the top was milky looking. The feed was bubbling a little before I even stirred it. It smells like a a mix between Timothy hay and pizza dough. Does this sound about right??

Sorry.. Live yeast, not activated.

When I stir it now there are copious amounts of little bubbles. I really want to try feeding it to my flock but don't want to make them sick since I don't know if my method was ok

Did you use bread dough yeast? I think most people are using apple cider vinegar for fermented feed. If you don't get a response on this thread, try asking on the big fermented feed thread. I was taught that raw bread yeast was not a good thing for animals to eat.

Please forgive my ignorance. First time posting, but frequent Backyard Chickens for info. I'm a year and couple of months into my wonderful journey with chickens. I was reading your posting about fermenting and curious about what, why and the benefits of it.
Appreciate any info.

Woodlandwoman, I'm not sure?? I looked into buying the acv but its $6 for a pint, which is the only size I can get. I'm on a budget and couldn't see spending that.. Especially when I will only need to use a few tablespoons of it.

Superchickfreak, do a search in the forum about it. When you ferment feed it becomes easier to digest, the nutrition is more obtainable and less food is needed to produce eggs.. It also provides probiotics so their poops become firmer and smell less.. Among other things

Thanks will do
