I'm getting my first quail tomorrow! OMG - am I ready?

I agree with everyone's posting above. I was out for the day (scary, right??!!!) but it was a genetic/breeding discussion with a dear friend. Now where's the pictures?

But, here's their home.......

'Nother question please!
I understand color sexing of my brown, golden and cinnamon, but how do you tell with the whites?

Two ways...well three. 1) Wait until its old enough and listen for a "crow", 2) Wait until its old enough and see if feathers start missing on its head (hen), 3) Wait until its 7-8 weeks and breeding season, Turn upside down and squeeze gently behind the vent...if foam comes out, male...no foam...female.

Quail lady could prob tell you an additional way or two....

Yeah the brown, golds and roux dilutes are pretty self explanatory. The whites are a bit tougher. The hens will be bigger and lower to the ground and the males will have a bulbous gland on his bum (when you press on it it will foam, he crows too). The male tends to be slimmer than hens.

...and another! Now usually, instant gratification is a bit too slow for me, so - I love these quail!!

I do understand that there could very well be no eggs for a bit now as they adjust, but this is cool for now!!
