Hello! I've already posted with a question, before I introduced myself. It's just how stuff seems to happen around here...Take my introduction into Chicken keeping about 3 weeks ago. Hubby and I had talked about chickens a few times, always with a resounding NO on his part. Then, about 4 weeks ago, he suddenly told me that he might be able to be talked into them. I was shocked, but didn't really give it much thought. A week later, we were at CountryMax to get something for the dog, and they had chicks. Next thing I know, he's talking to a sales guy and we walk out with stuff for the dog, plus 6 chicks, food and a couple other "chick starter" items.
So, off home, to figure out something to put them in and do some research on raising chickens. The chickies (2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Golden Comets and 2 Americauns) are in an old glass tank we had in the basement, but they are fast outgrowing it. We're building the coop this weekend.
Now the Husband is talking about getting several more, and some meat chickens. He wants to keep a rooster, if we end up with one, so we can breed them. (He also wants some that lay white eggs, but I'd like to get ones that will lay eggs of all different colors.) He's even talking about letting me get a couple of goats, which he's always vehemently refused in the past. Who is this guy who looks just like my husband?? Moreover, what in the world have I gotten myself into with this sudden increase in livestock?!
Hang on, it's time for another ride! Wheee!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new flock! Sounds like there are more chickens in your future!
Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Hurry and get some colored egg layers before he morphs back into his old self, and changes his mind. He probably thinks he is going to be rich selling eggs & chicks, so we won't burst his bubble (yet!)

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you are addicted!! Make yourself at home here on BYC and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Actually, he doesn't want to be rich, just more self-sufficient.

Hello and :welcome!

I believe that is why most of us raise animals. Who wouldn't want to be self sufficient? I know eggs in the stores here are about $2.00 for small up to $3.25 for x-large. Then you have the organic which runs about $4.25 a doz! Crazy prices! Good luck and enjoy your journey in raising BYC! Feel free to ask questions or if you just want to rant, were good for listening!
