I usually don't rant...well just to the DH but I am steaming right now after crying my eyes out.

My DD had her awards day this morning. She gets an academic award every year. It lasts a couple hrs. Then I had to go to my grandmothers to pick up my kids. Then I had to wait on my DH to come pick me up (My blazer had a flat this morning)

So...I come home and before we turn into our dirtroad I notice my horses in the neighbors yard down the road. So I run to get them, walk back to my house and run in to check on my chicks in the bator that hatched last night....

I go out to feed my chickens and chicks and notice a dead BR pullet. I have so many chicks ages 6-12 weeks that I couldn't really tell who was missing. Then I get to looking for my favorite little Black Copper Marans chick ( i love him because he is the runt) He is GONE! Then I get to looking for my other BCMs and they are all gone but one!

Our dogs did it, not sure which one but I am pretty sure they all joined in on the killing spree. I think in all I have 10 chicks missing with feathers scattered around their coops.

Yes, it is my fault mainly....the dogs aren't penned or tied. They have killed chickens before but that was over a year ago and I thought I broke them of it but apparently not. AND I left their coop door open as I do everyday for them to free range but usually I am always here so I didn't really think too much about leaving it open for a while during my absence.

I could really scream for hours right now!!

I'm sure it is harder when it your own dogs! It's hard to have one animal you love hurts another. I'm sorry you had such a bad day when it was suppose to be great.

Congratulations to your DD!!!

This happend to me and I ended up choosing my chickens over the dogs. After a couple of months I found new homes for my dogs because I could not look at them the same after they killed 18 of my 6mth old pullets that had just started laying. It was a tough decision I had my female sheppard mix over 12 years. The carnage they left in my yard caused me see her as a killer rather than my dog. I let her go.

I can say that it will take time for you to recover and I feel your pain.

Thanks ~ I knew you guys could sympathize.

I'm not really going to kill them but I sure want to.....It will take me a long time to love them again though....

I would like to find a new home for them but my DH and kids are attatched more to the dogs than the chickens.....I am not a dog person to begin with.

Oh, so heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss.

It was an accident. Don't blame the dogs and don't blame yourself. It's just a shame.

I can sypathize with you completely. Two Saturdays ago my dogs killed 9 of my 3 month old pullets. I had gone outside to let everyone out and they were all fine. Then I went inside to cook breakfast for the wife and kids (a Saturday ritual for me). We were in the middle of eating when I could hear the faint sound of the dogs barking and I could tell it was the bark taht meant they were after something. I ran outside and there were dead chickens everywhere. I walked back in the house and told my wife she better go pen the dogs because I was too mad to deal with them. If it were just me, the dogs would be gone right now, but the kids are attached to the dogs and don't really care about the chickens. I love my dogs too, but they are so aggrevating sometimes!
