In the Brooder
I have had my own hens and a rooster for about three years now. My family first started off with only Cinnamon Queens. I named them all and fell in love. However, I kept losing them due to sickness and being stressed about school and forgetting to put them up. (Yes, I know. I've gotten many scoldings from my mama about it. Believe me, it rocks my world when I lose one of my girls. I promise I take way better care of my girls now.) Then about a year and half ago to two, we got more chicks and a rooster! My father wanted to name him Foghorn Leghorn so that's his name now. "Foggy" is a Leghorn, hence the name. My chicks started to grow up and eventually, they grew big enough to start laying eggs! Unfortunately, I lost all of my Cinnamon Queens.
I have 10 girls right now, a rooster, and three baby chicks that are only about four days old.
I have Australorps, Silkies, Easter eggers, a brown leghorn, my rooster, a barred rock, another Cinnamon Queen, two Rhode Island Reds a Silkie, and two Silkie mixes (mama was eaten but they lived after a lot of care for them). My Australorps names are Stevie (who is a literal chicken QUEEN. She's survived extreme sickness as a chick, walked on the edge of death multiple times, has gotten attacked and survived. I'm pretty sure Stevie is protected by the good Lord himself) and Aussie. My Easter Eggers are named Elsa, Anna, and Suzie Cue. My brown leghorn is a twin. We lost Track due to the sickness that almost took Stevie. She and Field are best friends. (Brown Leghors are super fast. I mean, come on! The first time I took them out of the crate, they RAN like a predator was after them. So I named them Track & Field. Get it?) Obviously my rooster's name is Foghorn Leghorn, "Foggy" for short. My parents wanted to name the six new chicks paired names, so we named the Barred Rocks Betsy and Betty. We named the Cinnamon Queens Lucy and Ethel (Lucy is a bit more of a pecker). And we named the Rhode Island Reds Laverne and Shirley. However, we lost Betty, Shirley, and Ethel due to predators (Pretty sure it was my cat). (I actually went down to check on them since it was a hot day earlier and they were all huddled together. When I went down to the garden later, Betty and Ethel were gone without a trace. The chicken coop was in full safety mode. So a predator must have gotten them from above. I had lost Shirley the day after we got her due to her slipping out the fence which we fixed. So I'm not letting them out again until they're older. It's hard not to be mad at my cat. Socks is just doing what nature does but it's very difficult to not be upset with him. I'm mostly angry at myself because I asked my mom what to do since it was very hot and I didn't want to lose them due to the heat.) My adult Rhode Island's name is Ginger. My Poland Silkie is named Cinnamon. She was given to us from a family friend. Lastly, my two Silkie mixes are named (are you ready for it? Here we go) Lala and Hippo. When they were born, these were my brother and sister's favorite words at the time. "Lala" is what my sister called everything and Hippo was my brother's favorite animal.
I live out in the country so hands-down one of my favorite things is that I can open the run door and let them free range when they need to. It's adorable to go on the back deck and see them pecking around the ground for worms all over the yard. It's also adorable to see the girls flock around Foggy as he runs towards one that squawked. Another thing I really, truly, absolutely love is that my girls are basically like my own chicken army. When I bring them treats, they all run behind me like we're marching into battle. And let's talk about the ABUNDANCE OF EGGS!!! We haven't bought eggs from the store ever since we got chickens. (Aren't eggs really expensive now???) It's beautiful to collect eggs and see white from my Silkie, brown from my Australorps and Brown Leghorn to the blue tint from my Easter Eggers.
Some of my other hobbies include school. I'm a senior and I'm in choir, swim & dive, soccer, Student Council, FCA, and I'm the senior editor in the Yearbook committee. I'm a very active person and I like it that way. I'm also a chicken lover. I will talk about my girls to anyone that'll listen. My best friends basically know all my girls by now.
My family is pretty big. I have my mother's side from Arizona and my father's side from Kansas. I have an aunt and uncle with three cousins in Germany right now. My mother is Italian and my father is German. I'm adopted so unfortunately I don't get the awesome genes. I have an 8 month old brother, a 3 year old blonde brother, and a 4 1/2 year old sister. I have two cats along with my hens. Tally just gave birth to three adorable little kittens a couple of days ago. Socks is my other cat. He is Tally's son.
I actually found BYC while looking up something for my chicks. I was reading through articles and found out that I could subscribe and talk with other chicken lovers. I think all my friends think I'm crazier than they expected because I will talk about my chickens so much. I always have new stories for them every day. I have a lot of passion and my babies are definitely in that category.
