As the title says, I'm going to be hatching eggs, but since I've no Roo I planned to get Hatching eggs may 1st/2nd round there. So, I've been trying to see if I could get my hens to go broody.
I've 13 hens so I figured at least one of them's got to have a want to be a mother.
The flock consists of:
7 various polish
3 Cochins
1 cross between a Policauna (Cross between a polish and Amaracauna)
and
2 Amaracaunas.
I understand that not all, if any, polish go broody.
So I'm mostly relying on my Cochins and possibly my Amaracaunas.
Is there another breed that is reliable for being broody?

Silkies are known for going broody. Mine has been broody for a year now and we are finally letting her try to hatch some babies. She's on 3 eggs that are due April 1st.

We are hoping to get a silkie soon for that purpose, they are notorious brooders. Might be worth it to get an incubator though, hatching is fun

I've had silkies, but have but put off of them because when I did have some I lost all of them due to the heat here.
They all ended up with heat stroke because after we went to a poultry swap, we went to dinner with all of my flock in the back of the truck... I wasn't allowed to leave to check on them and they were pretty much gone by the time we were finished.

Silkies are suppost to very broody, but I think Cochins are just as broody as silkies. I have 3 broody Cochins setting on eggs right now ... best lil' mommies!
Oh, here is just a idea that might help them go broody:
Get a cardboard box and cut a hole in it and put lots of hay/shavings etc in it and then put some fake eggs in there. They just might set.

Hatching is fun, yes.
Always had to catch and count the little ones when I had a free range flock... Agrivation as it was.
