(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I had chickens growing up, then years ago as a stay at home mom. More recently we bought one roo and 9 hens at the beginning of covid. Now we have 7 hens and a young cockeral. The first rooster was cruel to the hens, he's gone!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 8, 22 eggs in the incubator.

(3) What breeds do you have? barred Rock and brown ones(forgot their breed)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Watching them, talking to them, they are only penned at night.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Miniature doll houses

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Married41 years, still work full time as an RN, 58 and wish I was able to retire

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :searched internet, stumble.in

Hello and welcome to BYC! This is a great community to learn, I've already learnt lots from simply lurking about, good luck with those two baby chicks 💕
:welcome
The dog killed them, my fault. The ones in the incubator will be in a better brooder. We have had dogs around our hens no problems for 2 years, free range hens. I didn't think they'd see the chicks as prey. I actually thought I had trained them to I actually thought I had trained them to herd them. Such a heartbreaking mistake on my part. I am looking for a thread to see if my rooster can ever be Kept without him becoming mean. I have a young cockerall now that is a pet, about 3 months old. He is an Isabel cuckoo Orpington. Are they a gentle breed.

Orpingtons are generally sweet tempered. My oldest rooster is an orpington & easter egger mix. He is as gentle as they come. All of his male offsprings have been sweet tempered too.
I hope yours will be a good rooster.

He was very aggressive last night when I brought him in. I think I'll be looking for a grown rooster with a better temperament if this keeps up. I do love buff Orpington. He's an Orpington, Just Isabel cuckoo.

I wouldn't keep an aggressive one. Not even a beautiful one. I hope you can find a good rooster!
