I'M IN A CHICKEN CRAZE!!!

Okay, like my profile says, I've just hatched! We use to have chickens in the past. We had only had Road Island Reds, but got rid of them for some reason; I was too young to remember. Now we are starting again! I have three Cuckoo Marans right now, two hens and a very beautiful rooster. I am in what my mom calls a chicken craze. I now want to know anything and everything about chickens! I mean everything. We are wanting more chicks and my mom has had me research everything I could about Large and Jumbo brown egg layers. We are okay with our Marans eggs, but we want even bigger. We are thinking of Black Australorps, Jersey Giants, Brags Mountain Buff Tails, and Orphingtons. We are wanting some friendly birds, especially hens! We might only possibly consider a rooster if it has a really good chance of being nice. We have heard that Black Australorp roosters are friendly and our friends' Lavender Orphingtons rooster is really friendly. Do any of these breeds have friendly roosters or are just friendly in general? I'm also open to any other breeds and ideas. I love the colors of my current roo and would be disappointed if we had to get rid of him, because he is getting a little bit too protective. He is warming up loads towards me, but keeps trying to charge my mother. We both love the idea of having a rooster to protect our hens when we let them roam (which we do during the day) and we wouldn't mind keeping him if he would loosen back up. We wouldn't have any need for another rooster if we could. Any ideas, advice, or suggestions?

Also, our coop isn't necessarily a coop. We have had to move our barn since we last had chickens, which is where my uncle built the coop. Right now they are in a large dog kennel with a dog house to lay in. We are most definitely wanting a new coop, but are also interested in making our own. We had an above ground pool before a giant storm tore it down a month or two ago. Now we just have a semi/partial deck that could possibly be used as a coop or run. I'll post some pictures of what it looks like. Hopefully it could be used as something. We would't mind building a new one either, we have plenty of wood, but we just don't know how and don't have any good plans. Anyone willing to share? Wouldn't say no to buying a coop either if its at the right price.

Sorry about all the questions, but like I said earlier, I'm chicken crazy right now!

Here is the deck

Anyone think this could be turned into a good chicken coop? I think it'll take a lot of creativity, but I think it can be done. Any advice?

The breed I highly recommend are silkies!!! they are incredibly sweet chickens, th roosters will protect the hens from predators but aren't mean, mine actually came up and sat on my foot once! LOL!!! the hens are very broody, not in a mean way though, they always want to sit on eggs fertile or not, but will let you collect them. Bantams are very sweet too, i miss mine.... :(

! Great to have you aboard! You might take a look at the Coops section below for a design you like. You can also type 'coop plans' in the BYC search - there are some free plans there I've seen. In terms of friendly roosters - I think it all depends on the individual bird rather than breed. I've had roosters of the same breed - one being very nice and be a beast! Good luck to you on your chicken journey!

This is a picture of our rooster and our two hens the day we first got them (which was about two or three months ago). Now the rooster is about 50% larger than he is in this picture and he is gorgeous. I'll post some more current pictures soon.
