Most of my 50 years i've wanted peacocks...I was working on this being THE year, i have a nice new 8x10 shed with an extra half story, and had planned to take some time off and build a flight run next month...but yesterday, i got a call i couldn't resist , and i'm now the owner of a rather battered Blue Indian pied peacock.

Not sure how old he is, he's missing his train cause he'd been jammed into a small mobile coop with more than two dozen chickens, but he still looks remarkably healthy, clear eyes, no nasal discharge, quiet breathing, fairly formed droppings.

What really grabbed my heart is his gentle manner. I'd been using the coop for 4 8-week old Ameraucanas that aren't quite big enough to go in with the big birds. They were a bit defensive, as chickens are...the peacock (my grandgirl named him "Kool") let them check and peck, even though he's bigger than all of them put together. He's just so regal, bending down to look at them.

I wish i'd had more time to be ready for him...I'll get him a girlfriend soon, he seems lonely. He's content this morning, I put perches uphigh, he can look out the gable window.

They said he'd been eating chicken feed, but I will get him some gamebird feed and his own feeder yet today, and put it where the chickens can't get it. i give my chickens cat food when they're moulting, to help get the feathers growing, that's OK for peacocks? I prolly need to worm him, debating taking him to the vet, he's been through a lot.

Any TLC suggestions for getting him up to speed? I'll post pics later when i have time to set up my PC, it crashed a while back and i can't find my canon util;ities disc...;~(.

Hey it took me 50 years to get them too -- well worth the wait!

worm him, sounds like you're on the right road w/the feeding -- you can give him some treats, too you know, they love pasta & grapes & watermelon, things like that. Just sit out there w/him & talk to him & he'll gentle down before you know it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of peafowl!!! [IMG]

He definitely likes watermelon ;~) Thanks all! I'll post some pics soon to see if someone can tell how old he is...my 7 yo harddrive crashed this spring, i made the mistake of getting it fixed (don't do it) and i can't get my camera program to run....think it's time for a new computer.

He doesn't have spurs yet, just bumps, does that help?

If he doesn't have spurs yet he is probably a peachick or a yearling. My peacock started getting pretty good spurs at two.[IMG]
