Hello!
Brand new here and don't have a clue on how to begin. All I know is that we really want to have 6 laying hens and we have a great place for them but, how to care for them and the millions of questions, like how often to clean and accidents and vets and vaccinations questions...that is the part that scares me. I can spend all day on the computer looking for answers but there are answers pro and con all subjects and so it's just an overwhelming mess. Anyway, glad to be here, maybe I can learn something.

I don't vaccinate chicks. Mareks is everywhere and vaccinations are not 100% prevention, anyway. I feed medicated feed and keep Corrid on hand for outbreaks of coccidosis. Only had one outbreak but it was deadly. All my fault, too. I stopped the medicated feed for a batch of chicks BEFORE I got them out of the brooder; it needs to be fed to them 2 to 3 weeks after they "hit the ground" so it helps them build immunity to the parasite and its side effects. With that said, DO NOT go surfing into the "Emergencies" forum unless you have a specific problem to solve!. It will just scare the heck out of you for no good reason. There's stuff in there which may never, ever happen in or to your flock. Don't go borrowing worries.
