Hello!
Brand new here and don't have a clue on how to begin. All I know is that we really want to have 6 laying hens and we have a great place for them but, how to care for them and the millions of questions, like how often to clean and accidents and vets and vaccinations questions...that is the part that scares me. I can spend all day on the computer looking for answers but there are answers pro and con all subjects and so it's just an overwhelming mess. Anyway, glad to be here, maybe I can learn something.

Welcome to our forum!

Check out our Learning center, if you haven't already found it. There are many different approaches to chicken care, as you'll see when you start looking around our forum. I'd also suggest you become familiar with the stickies, the groups of recommended threads linked at the top of each forum, for example Raising Baby Chicks.

Your avatar looks like you live where weather is warm. Check out this thread:

Mostly, have fun with your chickens, when you get them!

Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills! I can tell you my flocks' experiences would have been MUCH more precarious had I not discovered BYC. First I looked for coop plans, because what would be so hard about raising six little feed store chicks? HA! Pasty butt... Failure to thrive...Chicks falling over asleep in their water dishes... Having seizures (dust bathing! What a relief") in the brooder bedding. On BYC, you can find assistance and information for all the things you did wrong because you didn't check BYC first. ;) I don't vaccinate chicks. Mareks is everywhere and vaccinations are not 100% prevention, anyway. I feed medicated feed and keep Corrid on hand for outbreaks of coccidosis. Only had one outbreak but it was deadly. All my fault, too. I stopped the medicated feed for a batch of chicks BEFORE I got them out of the brooder; it needs to be fed to them 2 to 3 weeks after they "hit the ground" so it helps them build immunity to the parasite and its side effects. With that said, DO NOT go surfing into the "Emergencies" forum unless you have a specific problem to solve!. It will just scare the heck out of you for no good reason. There's stuff in there which may never, ever happen in or to your flock. Don't go borrowing worries. ;) The BYC Community is wonderful. Some of my best friends are folks I have never even met - and when I found folks local to me, I was thrilled. BYCers are special people. Welcome! Enjoy your chickens once you get 'em.
