Hey everybody. I'm Krista. I've been here before quite a few years back. I had about 100 chickens before and haven't had them in a few years. I came back to be sure I'm still on the right track with how I raise my new babies.
As of now we're starting small with 3 RIR hens and 1 americauna roo. They're only about a month old. We keep them inside on cooler days and let them roam a little bit outside on warmer days. We're in North Carolina so the weather is still spotty.
I have 5 kids ranging from 8y to 7m and they all absolutely love the idea of raising baby chicks. We've taught them they can't touch and not to bother them until they're a little older.
We have a 3 yr old golden retriever who's name is Gunner and tries to be momma hen. He loves to check on them and is very gentle with them while he watches us clean their nesting area. We're starting our babies in a coop for a while with free range for about a couple hrs a day then eventually will switch to complete free range. I have a few questions of course bc I've never raised from hatchlings. I look forward to reading and soaking up as much info as possible here with everyone!
