My husband has been complaining that the birds are costing too much for getting nothing out of them. So I called my breeder and was delighted to hear she had several adult laying hens for sale. So with grumbling husband and excited kids we drove out to get my four new barred rock girls.

Let me first explain it rarely rains here but it rains hard when it does. She is new to the area also. Everyone knows to make sure you have good downhill drainage.

Well we get there and discover she has had a devistating loss. Last night it rained really hard and fast washing about 40 of her smaller birds away and drowning several more. What didn't drown or wash away piled on the smaller ones and smothered them. she had three two month olds left. For being a good customer and promising to help her next year after she rebuilds her coops she gave them too me. Two are cochin crosses and one is a buff EE.

So my math adds up to whats a few more and hubby cant complain about them not doing something because the four barred rock gals are proven layers.

The hens are in the dog pen and the little ones are all huddled in the makeshift brooder for the night.

So for $40 bucks I got four barred rocks and 3 little pullets. Not bad for our area.

Oh, poor babies

But I'm glad you got some hens. Hope you get lots of eggs!

I should say I got 8 out of the deal. She has a little blue EE in her brooder that I can have. My new hens are giving me up to 4 eggs a day. Today we only found three so far. But yesterday I got one from each of them.
