I just got on Wednesday 30 cornish cross straight run chicks. I had also gotten last Saturday 17 guines and 2 Silver Appleyard ducklings. My hubby picked up my RIR chicks last night.

Well I had them in my newer chicken house. Where the door closes was broken in a wind storm so we had screwed a piece of wood into the side of the house and we would lower it to keep the door closed. We also put a rake up against the door to keep it from being accidently blown open.

This morning I was getting things ready for our branding and I happened to look outside and the coop's door is wide open.

I go running out there yelling about who had been in there and left to door open.
It was not a pleasant sight. No guines. no ducks. 3 RIR chicks. 4 cornish cross chicks. 1 fat cat.

If I had had a gun right then I would have shot that one and all the rest of our outdoor cats.

I am now trying to find more chicks. My daughter admitted to going in to see the chicks and not lower the latch or putting the hoe back up.
Hubby has promised to re-hang the door a different direction so the wind does not catch and break it again.

Not a good morning.

Bet your daughter is feeling badly.

I would dig a hole and then I would cull the cat right away, it will be looking for a way to get more.

I'm sorry.

I don't know how old your daughter is, but if she's young, maybe you could put some sort of latch high enough that she can't reach it? That would keep you from having to move the door.

I have my hens in a metal shed. I put a cinder block in front of the door to keep it closed. Not the greatest, but so far the coons haven't gotten them.

So sorry for your loss.

Oh my, I must say I am shocked at the recommendation of shooting the cat!!

I am sorry, this sounds like human error and an awful, awful accident.

Cats are hunters. Some of the greatest hunters on the planet as a matter of fact.
*This is what they do* -when given the opportunity. They should not be shot, or abandoned for following the God given instincts they have.

It is so,so sad, but really, why is the right answer to kill the creature?

I would recommend you do not shoot the cat & secure the door like you planned.
