I'm trying not to get too nervous at this point. She's only been MIA for about four hours. Still it is unusual for one of my hens to stay gone from the flock for that amount of time. They pretty much hang together.
There's 80 acres to search and it's hot as the dickens outside. Alot of brush and while I'm not scared of snakes I don't like to meet them by accident either.
She's not one that I would ever expect to have an ounce of broody blood in her.
Keeping my fingers crossed she'll turn up soon.

Rather than fear she's succumbed to heat, why not assume she's found herself a cool, shady spot in some unlikely place, and is hanging out there? Then she'll probably come back to roost in the cool of the evening, which is probably soon for you--it's already 5pm PST. Any streams running through your property? Cold-dripping air conditioners? Seepage areas? That's where I'd go to look.

Oh I'm not afraid she's succumbed to the heat. They've been handling that pretty well. It's just too hot for me to do much searching.
Just not like them to up and disappear on me. Been about five hours now. I'll check again before their bedtime, which is roughly an hour from now.
I heard a hen doing the egg song down by the storm cellar this morning. Snuck up on her, hard as it is for me to get down there. She turned to me with a look that clearly said fooled ya!

Well, she's back. I have no idea where she disappeared to!
Sometimes I think my DH pays them off (in scratch) to pull stunts to keep me occupied and out of trouble while he's working.
